Hi, I’m John Newhall. I’m excited to be running to represent Ward 2 on the Salem City Council. As a proud lifelong Salem resident, community & nonprofit leader, scholar, and active volunteer, I’m excited to bring my talents and skills into public service. This city has shaped who I am, and now I’m excited to give back by serving as your Ward 2 City Councillor.

Salem is rich with historical and artistic culture. As Chair of the Salem Cultural Council, I have worked to support and fund artistic and cultural projects that enrich our city and strengthen its vibrant creative community. My leadership has helped bring valuable resources to local artists, organizations, and events that celebrate Salem’s cultural heritage.

As a nonprofit leader and religious professional, I have cultivated my ability to listen and learn from those around me. As your city councillor, I will offer this attentive, open, thoughtful responsiveness to each of you. I am committed to listening to what you need, what you wish for, and what your concerns are as a Salem resident.

The primary job of the Ward Councillor is to listen, respond, and be attentive to the needs and concerns of those in the ward. I have cultivated my ability to listen and learn from those around me. As an engaged member of the Salem community, I’ve listened to a wide array of resident voices.

I’ve heard from you that in Ward 2 we need to improve communication between City Hall and Salem residents, develop stronger public transportation in and around our city, continue creating climate resiliency, decrease traffic congestion, promote safe pedestrian-friendly communities, and ensure Salem is and remains affordable for all residents. We need to make sure housing in Salem remains affordable.

We need sensible and thoughtful decision making with as much neighborhood and community input as possible. There are no one-size fits all answers for Salem. We are a city that requires creative solutions and transparent discernment.

I envision a more accessible, sustainable, and thriving Salem. Dedicated to public service and with a deep love for Salem, I am ready to bring my leadership and experience to the City Council. By working together, the Salem community can continue to build a future that reflects our needs and our values.
