The First Local Candidate Event

The Salem Democrats and the North Shore Democratic Socialists of America co-hosted an event for Salem residents to meet the candidates on 14 July 2025. Below is my candidate introduction in English and Spanish. I only presented the English version during the event. The candidates introduced themselves and then the floor was open for questions.

Los demócratas de Salem y los socialistas demócratas de América de North Shore organizaron conjuntamente un evento para que los residentes de Salem conocieran a los candidatos el 14 de julio de 2025. English Transcript of Candidate Introduction:

I’m John Newhall. I’m so glad to be here with you tonight. Thank you for coming out to listen and engage together in our community. Each of us up here this evening has a deep commitment to Salem and a vision for how to help our city flourish. I hope some of what I share about my vision resonates with you in some way.

I’m a historian, volunteer, activist, community organizer, and lifelong Salem resident. My background in academia, ministry, and nonprofit organizations, has cultivated my ability to listen and learn from those around me. As your city councillor, I will offer this attentive, open, thoughtful responsiveness to each of you. I am committed to listening to what you need, what you wish for, and what your concerns are as a Salem resident. I’m committed to working collaboratively to identify and progress toward growing our community into an evermore creative, diverse, sustainable home for all. Ward 2 needs a responsive community leader committed to active listening, communication, and transparency. 

I’ve spent the last few years with my ears to the ground, listening intently to resident concerns and ideas. In the 1994 film With Honors, Joe Pesci’s character states that the drafters of the US Constitution wanted “a government of listeners not lecturers.” I’ve heard from you that in Ward 2 we need to address the increasing impact of tourism on our neighborhoods. We have to ensure that residents can afford to continue living in our city. We need sensible and thoughtful decision making with as much neighborhood feedback as possible. There are no one-size fits all answers for Salem. We are a city that requires creative solutions and transparent discernment.

As your Ward 2 Councillor, I promise to be accessible and listen with an open mind to your concerns and your creative ideas.

Hola, soy John Newhall. Estoy muy contento de estar aquí con ustedes esta noche. Gracias por venir a escuchar y participar juntos en nuestra comunidad. Todos los que estamos aquí esta noche tenemos un profundo compromiso con Salem y una visión de cómo ayudar a nuestra ciudad a prosperar. Espero que algo de lo que voy a compartir sobre mi visión les resulte familiar de alguna manera.

Soy historiador, voluntario, activista, organizador comunitario y residente de Salem desde siempre. Mi experiencia en el mundo académico, el ministerio y las organizaciones sin ánimo de lucro me ha permitido desarrollar mi capacidad para escuchar y aprender de los que me rodean. Como concejal de su ciudad, ofreceré esta respuesta atenta, abierta y reflexiva a cada uno de ustedes. Me comprometo a escuchar lo que necesitan, lo que desean y lo que les preocupa como residentes de Salem. Me comprometo a trabajar en colaboración para identificar y avanzar hacia el crecimiento de nuestra comunidad para convertirla en un hogar cada vez más creativo, diverso y sostenible para todos. El distrito 2 necesita un líder comunitario receptivo, comprometido con la escucha activa, la comunicación y la transparencia.

He pasado los últimos años con los oídos bien abiertos, escuchando atentamente las preocupaciones e ideas de los residentes.
